Iron Born Pizza

A couple weeks ago, I visited Smallman Galley in the Strip District of Pittsburgh. It’s a small cafe with open seating that contains four restaurants and a bar. My friend and I decided to try Iron Born, a Detroit-style pizza place. I honestly had never heard of Detroit-style pizza until I had visited the place. It’s kind of like Chicago deep dish pizza in that it has a very thick, almost sweet crust. However, the pizza is shaped like a rectangle and cut into squares. The only item on the menu was the Brunch Pie. A massive pizza pie containing sausage, shaved fingerling potatoes, cheddar cheese, fried eggs, and a maple drizzle. I have to be honest, I was a little scared to have the maple drizzle on the pizza but I decided whoever created it knows pizza better than I do, so I gave it a try. As I walked into the cafe, I noticed someone munching on this same dish and my eyes widened at how massive it was. Luckily, my friend was having the same craving so we were able to split the order and I had more than enough pizza for a meal. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this pie. I thought the maple drizzle would be a bit too much, but it was the perfect ingredient that tied the whole pizza together. The crust was thick and fluffy, the cheese was abundant and gooey, and the potatoes were nice and crisp. This was hands down one of the best pizzas I have ever had. I must say, Detroit has a good thing going with this one.
