Waffallonia

Something I'm super passionate about is Belgian waffles. I was first exposed to the treat when I saw a waffle food truck that regularly came by my campus. I had avoided it most of the year because I, quite frankly, did not care much for waffles. A friend had suggested I try it and so I did. I don't know what they put in these things but it is most certainly not legal. All I had was a plain leige waffle, however it changed my life. I made it my mission to hit up this truck every time it was on campus; Sometimes buying more than one. I later studied abroad in Europe and had the opportunity to go to Brussels, Belgium. To my shock, they tasted the exact same as the ones from the food truck I get in Durham, NC.

When I found out I was moving to Pittsburgh, my first instinct was to check and see if they have a Belgian waffle place. Once I knew I was visiting the city, I found a place called Waffallonia which was not too far from my hotel. As I was expecting, the waffle was just as good as the ones I had tried in Belgium and in North Carolina. As I chewed on the waffle I felt at peace that there was something so familiar in a place I had never been to before. It was that moment when I realized, "Ok, maybe this place can really become a home". I know it seems a little dramatic but a waffle truly brought me this comfort.

I also had the pleasure of chatting with the owner who is a great guy. He's a former University of Pittsburgh grad and a computer engineer. He said he opened up the store because he wanted a career change and had a passion for waffles. I, too, am an engineer and have a passion for waffles. Maybe I can follow in his footsteps one day...
